Horrible Histories….
The treatment of some people during the 20th Century created a group of vulnerable and socially and educationally de-skilled adults. This was achieved through segregated education and care, people were placed in education and care establishments outside of mainstream society.
After leaving life in institutions and entering mainstream society some people were not able to react safely to some of the dangers. Some were susceptible to abuse by the less scrupulous and some found the world a very scary place.
The people who lived within the mainstream society had been denied the opportunity to engage with some caring and interesting people who had a lot to offer to the world. Some people were a bit scared of people who looked different or acted in ways that were unfamiliar. Some people saw an opportunity to exploit those they regarded as different and weak. Opportunities within the work place and social opportunities were denied to people who could be regarded as different. It is not known how many great ideas, positive contributions or friendships were missed.
